Short answer: Light a Qatari villa in layers. Use security light on the gate, boundary wall and garage, safety light on paths and steps, accent light on palms, plants and the façade, and ambient light in the courtyard and seating areas. Use warm white (about 3000K) for gardens and seating, and white (about 6000K) only where security matters. Solar lights let you do all of this without trenching cables.

1. Main gate and house number

This is where guests, taxis and delivery drivers look first. Put a light on each gate pillar and a spotlight on the house number or name plate.

Solar entrance lights are ideal here, because gate pillars are rarely close to a power point.

2. Boundary wall and fence

Long boundary walls are the classic place for solar security lighting. Space motion sensor wall lights every 4–6 m. They glow softly on standby and switch to full brightness when someone approaches.

This is more effective, and less disturbing for neighbours, than floodlights that stay on all night.

3. Front door and porch

Mount a pair of lights at about 1.8–2 m on either side of the door, or one above it. Warm white feels welcoming. A motion sensor means the porch is bright exactly when you arrive with shopping bags. See our front door lights.

4. Garage and car porch

You need bright, reliable light here for parking and unloading. A motion-activated solar light with 1000+ lumens on detection is usually enough for a two-car porch. See garage and driveway lights.

5. Palm trees and landscaping

Uplighting is the single most impressive effect in a garden in Qatar. Place an adjustable solar spotlight 30–50 cm from the base of a palm and angle it up the trunk. Use warm light for date palms and bougainvillea, and white light for sculptural plants such as agave. See landscape lights.

6. Paths, steps and stairs

Every change in level should be lit. Place low lights every 1.5–2.5 m along paths and stagger them on wider walkways. On outdoor stairs, light the top and bottom at least. See pathway lights and staircase lights.

7. Courtyard, majlis area and patio

This is where families spend winter evenings, so the light should be soft and warm. Combine wall lights for general light, a decorative solar floor lamp beside the seating, and a spotlight on a feature wall or tree.

During Ramadan and Eid, add lanterns for a festive look. See courtyard lights and patio and terrace lights.

Solar or wired?

For new-build villas with landscaping still underway, a wired low-voltage system is an option. For existing villas, and for rented homes, solar is usually the practical choice. There is no digging through finished landscaping, no electrician and no running cost. Many homeowners mix both: wired lights near the house, solar on walls, gates and in the garden.
